Why Don't More Women Hunt?

March 21st, 2009

My message in this "Inside Track" to all our website visitors, customers, employees and friends starts with a question: Why don't more women hunt?

Now I have some good ole boys in my camp that would give me a hard look if I were to ask that question.  Some would say that hunting camp is their "escape" and I believe that men actually need som male bonding time.  A time to laugh, tell stories, clash mugs together, tell off-color jokes and be cavemen.

On the other hand, there are adventurous women out there who would not only find camp life and hunting a refreshing change, but they would be darn good at it.  The fact that they are more patient and subtle in nature would probably bring them closer to more game and less likely to "bust in" on game the way we men might.

I recently read an article on one of the earliest women hunters from the early 1900's.  This story is a fascinating account of a countess, socialite and very spoiled woman named Cissy Patterson, who turned pat westerner and became an accomplished elk hunter in Wyoming.  I found the story of her travels with her old west guide, Cal Carrington, to be very interesting.

I highly recommend reading this story of Cissy Patterson, written by Pattie Layser and taken from the April edition of the Rocky Mountain Foundation's magazine, Bugle.  I think all hunters or those who could be hunters, men and women alike, will enjoy it.  Click here to download a copy of the article.

So I leave you with the question:  Why don't more women hunt?  I'd love to hear from anyone who might offer some insight.  Please send your comments to me at info@landandcamps.com

By the way, to all outdoor lovers - enjoy spring!  It's great to hear the redwing blackbirds sing, see a trout rise, witness nesting ducks and geese and hear a tom turkey gobble on a misty morning at daybreak.....
